Information Communication Technology (ICT)

  • Ireland is the second largest exporter of computer and IT services in the world and currently the European Headquarters for many of the world’s largest tech companies.
  • Despite fears of new disruptive technologies/automation threatening certain roles, the need for skilled employees to use advanced technologies will become more apparent than ever.
  • Almost 50% of those employed in ICT occupations in Ireland are employed outside of the ICT sector.
  • It has been reported that almost 40% of ‘difficult to fill’ roles across all sectors in Ireland in recent years were in the area of ICT.
  • There has been a significant upsurge in the number of people employed in the ICT sector in Sligo and Leitrim and these figures are set to dramatically increase in the coming years through a combination of existing organisations expanding and the introduction of new ICT employers in the region.
  • In addition, employers from other sectors in the region including manufacturing, engineering, retail, hospitality and construction are all actively recruiting for ICT graduates.
  • Many of these local employers provide opportunities to employees for travel, upskilling and flexible working arrangements.
  • Local companies are actively recruiting for graduates and experienced employees in a wide range of areas including Software Development, Data Science/Analytics and Technical Support, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotic Processing Automation (RPA) and the Internet of Things (IoT). All these areas are expected to experience strong growth in the coming years in the Sligo / Leitrim region.
  • Local employers are concerned that not enough people are pursuing careers in ICT despite the significant opportunities available within the sector.
